Blu-ray Players
What should I consider when I choose Blu-ray player?
Today there are approximately 100 different Blu-ray players on the market and new models are appearing all the time! Which should I choose?
As usual, the answer is never easy, but we shall try to give some tips on what you should look at where you will find the Blu-ray player that's right for you!
Resolution
This is not much to talk about, a Blu-ray player shall cope with 1080p ie 1920x1080 pixels progressive, nothing to discuss .. although there are models that have lower resolution.
Price range
There are Blu-ray players today from about: 100€ up to over 2000€, but most good players are between 200€ and 700€, think about how much money you're willing to spend before you look more at what options there are. It is not always the most expensive Blu-ray players that gets the best scores of expert and user reviews!
Format Support
What will you use your Blu-ray player for, Blu-ray movies, of course, but a Blu-ray players are so much more, all Blu-ray players can handle regular CDs and DVDs, but there is a big differences in what other formats they support.
If you for example have video files on your computer that you want to play, either from disc, USB or over your home network. Look for support for DivX and Xvid which are the most common, but some players also support mkv files, which is a popular format for compressing high resolution material. If you want to watch your vacation photos in the player you need support for image files jpg / jpeg and other image formats as gif or png.
Would you also play video games, you should select the PlayStation3, as well as being the coolest gaming console on the market, it is also a very competent Blu-ray player with wireless networks.
Network
Many Blu-ray players have network connection that lets you connect to BD-Live and other Internet services like YouTube for example through your regular Internet connection. Some players also allows you to access your files directly into your computer. The network connection can either be wired or wireless.
Audio formats
For an optimal Blu-ray experience, the sound is as important as the image, therefore you should compare the audio formats the player supports, here it is also important to check what formats your sound system / receiver supports the most common are: Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS HD,
Dolby TrueHD and PCM
Connections
Here, look at your options to connect other equipment.
Digital video output - HDMI connection
Analog video output - scart, component or s-video
Analog audio output - RCA 5.1, 7.1 or ordinary rca, headphone
Digital audio output - Coaxial and Optical
USB - for connecting USB memory, HDD or Camera
Network - Wired or wireless
Loading time
Blu-ray players takes longer to load the movie when you insert the disk than a standard DVD player, so if you find it annoying, you should choose a Blu-ray player with short loading time.
Upscaling
Many Blu-ray players have the ability to upscale standard DVD movies from 576i to 1080p using advance image processing functions, so you can get a much sharper image on a standard DVD movie.
Regions
Blu-ray movies can be provided with coding for the region in the world they are intended for. you cant watch a filmfrom region A, with a Blu-ray player for the Swedish market, which is region B (or 2 as it is sometimes called). However, there are Blu-ray players that can be done "region free" so they can play movies from all regions.
Region A: (1)
East Asia (excluding China and Mongolia), Southeast Asia, North America, South America and its colonies.
Region B: (2)
Africa, Southwest Asia, Europe (Sweden) (excluding Russia and Kazakhstan), Oceania and its colonies.
Region C: (3)
Central Asia, East Asia (only China and Mongolia), South Asia. Eurasia and its colonies.
All Blu-ray movies, however, is not region coded. Some movies can be played on any Blu-ray player, ie region free, sometimes also called Region 0.
Design
Last but certainly not least, the Blu-ray player becomes part of the decor in your living room so it is quite important to you find one that fits and looks great together with other equipment and furniture.
Htpc
There is an alternative to a traditional Blu-ray or DVD players that have become increasingly popular in recent years, it is what is commonly called HTPC (Home Theater PC) then a typical computer in a chassie that looks more like a receiver than a computer, connected to a flat-screen TV or projector, the chassie has been equiped with a Blu-ray player, a video card for HD and a digital sound card, many also want to use their HTPC to watch TV with, so you can also install a TV card. you need to install some software to play, unfortunately, lacks Windows Media Center support for Blu-ray so far, so an extra software like PowerDVD is required.
Now it's just to start comparing, here below we have added some Blu-ray players in various price ranges that we recommend.
Good luck!
